News from the Essec USA Community

Not Just the Usual...

When you received the invitation for the 2nd Annual Newsmaker Event, was your first reaction "Not another panel about corporate governance and scandals"? However, this won't be like all those other events about corporate governance and ethics!

We will be exploring cultural differences in business, not accounting rules or the latest SEC ruling. As such, the Essec professor we invited is a specialist in negotiation; and, he is only one of the impressive panelists. In a time of international conflict, we will try to understand different cultures and accept varying business ethics from around the world.

Don't wait! You don't want to miss the event that addresses this important and relevant issue. Register soon - and invite people your friends and colleagues. Supporting the event is a superb way to invest in mutual understanding.

Upgrading technology is not always easy. The proof is in the pain of going through the improvements of delivering of our newsletter. We apologize for any interruptions in e-mails these "improvements" may have brought. They were meant to provide a smoother and more reliable communication. Allow us to explain...

We are reviewing our database, upgrading our system, and trying to find out more about some of our readers. It is our hope that these improvements will provide our readers (both alumni and our "Friends of Essec USA") with better service. If you are reading this e-mail, you are still on our list and your service will not be discontinued. (Lucky you!) We may still be contacting you and, in advance, we thank you for your response.

With the new software, we will send the newsletter in the format you desire and to the email you prefer, as well as provide more targeted content.

This update may involve some glitches and we sincerely apologize for any confusion. The volunteers of Essec USA are happy to participate for the ideals of Essec USA and appreciate your support during this phase. Your help and understanding are invaluable.

"Building Value in the New Financial Services Economy"

Michael Jacobides, Assistant Professor of Strategic and International Management at the London Business School and Senior Fellow of the Wharton Financial Institutions Center

Monday, 10 March 2003 – presented by the London Business School Club of New York

Once upon a time, not too long ago, the Financial Services industry was an untroubled, fairytale realm, made up of stable fiefdoms -- Insurance, Banking, Specialized Intermediation and the like. Things rarely changed, innovation was kept to a minimum, and everyone kept to their own specialty. Rarely, did anyone venture outside their own area of expertise.

Life would have been lived happily ever after – except –

· Consumers became more savvy and started looking for ways to increase their yields and for products that served their special needs, from corporate and individual perspectives.

· Lawmakers started deregulating the industries and thus opened up tightly-closed markets to new entrants and competition.

· Technology created new distribution channels and new entrants, and restructured the value chain and profit shifts within it.

To build value in the New Financial Services Economy, companies need to understand how value is migrating in the different sectors, and where value can be found. No longer is it good enough just to be operationally efficient. Change is being driven by technology, deregulation and consumer behavior. Financial service firms need to come up with new value propositions.

Come to learn how the rules of the game have changed and where the patterns of value migration are emerging and how these changes will impact strategic development within the industry.

The London Business School Club of New York is proud to feature Michael Jacobides, Assistant Professor of Strategic and International Management at the London Business School and Senior Fellow of the Wharton Financial Institutions Center, and his presentation entitled: "Building Value in the New Financial Services Economy".
