Interview of the Month - June 2004:
Cyril Rabeisen (ESSEC 01)
Q: What is your background?
I am 27 years old and grew up in the Paris region. I studied at ESSEC from
1997 to 2001. During the “Apprenticeship” program I worked as a business
analyst for a financial holding company listed at the Paris stock exchange.
After graduation I joined the financial direction of Total, the French oil
producer and distributor, right after the merger with Fina and Elf. I first
was involved in a significant updating project of the holding’s ERP (based on
the SAP technology) for a year and a half. Then I led the implementation of
a financial data warehouse and of an automatic payment system based on
IBAN banking references.
Q: Why did you decide to come and stay here?
At the end of that mission with Total, I decided to fulfill an old dream of
mine: to give one year of my life to the poor and to the children. I knew
that I just had to do it or forget about it. My employer kindly helped me
realize this project granting me a year off. So I committed myself to a
French Catholic organization that sends young people to the most deprived
areas of the world: Heart’s Home (Points-Coeur). In 20 different countries
of all the continents, the volunteers aim at spending time with the children
that have nothing but the street to play in. The latest foundation was 6
months ago, in the Bronx, NY. That is where I was sent and that is why I
now live in the United States.
Q: What advice would you give to ESSEC graduates who would like
to come to work here?
Of course my work here is not representative of the jobs ESSEC graduates
are looking for. Nevertheless, as far as NYC is concerned, I would say that
it is important to forget all the European prejudice about the American
people. You will meet people from all around the world, which creates a
very special atmosphere, slightly different from what one would expect.
Additionally, one had better be a strong-tempered hard worker to succeed
in the US!
Q: How do you think your ESSEC background helped you to be
where you are?
My ESSEC background certainly helped me for my first years in the
professional world. I have been working in the financial and information
systems industries, which requires good theoretical skills as well as a strong
adaptability. The level of education provided by ESSEC helped me a lot to
fulfill these requirements. In New York, the international environment I
currently live in reminds me of some classes I had at ESSEC with students
from all over the world. Moreover, Hearts Home USA recently organized a
fundraiser for the benefit of a project for poor people in India. The
international experience, the ability to work in English as well as a solid
knowledge of the American culture were for me key assets in the
organization of the event.
Q: What do you consider as your role in the ESSEC family?
I am always interested in learning about the events of my school, I am a
member of the ESSEC Alumni Association and I am happy to try and help
young graduates looking for a job or an internship. But so far my
contribution has not gone much further, so I consider my role in this family
as rather modest.
Thank you Cyril…
