ABOUT ESSEC PARIS BUSINESS SCHOOL
A School where rigor, freedom, and the progressive exercise of responsibility
develop talent, forge character and open spirits to the corporate environment
and the world.
An history of excellence
ESSEC was set up as an elite French business school in 1907 and will soon be celebrating its
centenary. Part of the unique French system of Grandes Ecoles to train future leaders for
business and society, ESSEC has produced many graduates who are reaching the very top
echelons in their professions. Among them are Christian Balmes, CEO of Shell France, and
Thierry Antinori, Vice President of Lufthansa, who feature in ESSEC’s current advertising
campaign, along with many others.
Numerous initiatives
The values underpinning programs at the Business School include excellence, innovation, ethics,
the international dimension and humanism. There are a number of initiatives now underway to
strengthen ESSEC’s position on the international scene. Foremost among them are the
partnership with the University of Mannheim to launch new programs of European scope and
the decision to open an ESSEC Center in Singapore for research and teaching. The ESSECMannheim
modular Executive MBA offers participants the chance to work and study on several
sites (Paris, Mannheim, Brussels, Budapest, Madrid, …) and serves as the pilot project of this
new partnership. Other joint activities and programs are expected to follow. The ESSEC Asian
Center in Singapore has the backing of the Singapore Economic Development Board. It will be a
center for research into Asian issues and teaching modules will be prepared for the near future.

Another example of innovation is the creation of a New Business Center five years ago, with its
start-up incubator, its new Institute for Company Transfers, its teaching programs, its annual
Tremplin investment capital forum at the French Senate and its incubators with prestigious
partners. In addition, program curricula are regularly updated to correspond to market needs.
A strong alumni network
With over 25,000 Alumni active worldwide, ESSEC Business School has become a major source
of top managerial talent for French and international firms. Known for its rigorous selection
process, the flagship MBA Program now has about 20% of its courses taught in English.
A distinguished faculty of over 100 professors ensures high-quality teaching and research across
all ESSEC Business School programs. Approximately one third of the ESSEC faculty is now made
up of foreign nationals, and many professors hold doctorates from Anglo-Saxon universities.
Faculty members regularly publish in leading academic journals, and many serve as consultants
to private companies. Marie-Laure Djelic, recent winner of the prestigious Max Weber award
from the American Sociology Association, is currently Dean of Faculty.
An overview of our programs
The ESSEC MBA Program is a graduate business program integrating a minimum of 18
months of professional experience into the curriculum. This program is divided into two
periods: the first period (first year) and the ESSEC MBA period (average three years).
Each student designs his or her own curriculum through the 200 electives offered. There
is a unique work-study and internship option in which participants spend equal time at
work and study.
Two sectorial MBAs: IMHI MBA in International Hospitality Management, a joint
program with Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration, was set up in 1981.
The MBA in International Luxury Brand Management is the only one of its kind in the
world and was launched in 1995. These MBAs are taught in English, with the
involvement of high-ranking executives from the appropriate sector.
The EPSCI BBA Program (Bachelor in International Business Administration) is an
undergraduate curriculum created in 1975 ad redesigned as a Bachelor in International
Business Administration (4-year program) in 1991. It recruits students immediately after
their secondary education. EPSCI delivers a degree accredited as a Maîtrise Universitaire
(four years of study) by the French Ministry of National Education.
Specialized Postgraduate Programs (M.S.) offer ten full-time, one-year programs
and eight part-time programs that concentrate on various sectors or functions.
The Ph.D. Program, set up in 1974, prepares professors, researchers and consultants
at the international level in management science and business economics.
Executive Programs: these include degree-granting programs like the Executive MBA,
Executive Master’s Programs, Advanced Management Programs, and Customized
Corporate Programs, as well as shorter seminars. ESSEC’s large offer of executive
education programs ensures that the School serves the on-going needs of professionals
and firms. The executive education campus is in the heart of Paris’s largest corporate
center – La Défense.
The current total enrollment in full-time programs is over 3700 students, about 1200 of whom
graduate each year, and there are about 5000 participants in executive education programs.
